An unpleasant experience and an interesting revelation from Thailand<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3802917 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3802917\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66a7d9f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66a7d9f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:344\">I experienced a digital nightmare yesterday. One that we actually don't even realize in our normal functioning. One moment I was browsing Facebook, the next I was blocked. \u201eAccount blocked.\u201c No warning, no explanation, just a digital wall. My heart sank. As someone who uses Facebook for personal connections, marketing, client connections and professional networking, I felt like a significant part of my online identity had just disappeared. Especially here in Thailand, social networks and apps are an essential way to connect - whether on a friend or business level.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:398\">Panic set in. I scoured the help pages, filled out countless forms and tried all the suggested \u201efixes\u201c - all to no avail. It was like shouting into the void. The automated responses offered no real solution and the frustration was immense. There was absolutely no wrongdoing on my part; no suspicious activity, no violation of the rules. Just a sudden, unexplained deadlock.<\/p><h3 data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:46\"><strong>Lifeline: Meta Business Helpdesk<\/strong><\/h3><div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div><p data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:400\">My only salvation and ultimately the path to account recovery was access to <strong>Meta Business Helpdesk<\/strong>. As a professional user, I was able to connect with a real person. After putting in a lot of effort, explaining my situation and providing the necessary verification, they were able to restore my account. The relief was immeasurable, but the whole experience left me with a lingering sense of unease. Why did this happen?<\/p><h3 data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:33\"><strong>A Disturbing Coincidence<\/strong><\/h3><div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div><p data-sourcepos=\"19:1-19:293\">The mystery deepened when I talked to two other foreigners living here in Thailand. To my surprise, they experienced <em>Yesterday<\/em> exactly the same. Also, their Facebook accounts were inexplicably blocked and like me, they did nothing wrong. It wasn't just a random mistake; there was something more significant at play.<\/p><h3 data-sourcepos=\"21:1-21:69\"><strong>Disclosure: New Thai Regulations Affecting Social Networks?<\/strong><\/h3><div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div><p data-sourcepos=\"23:1-23:479\">Today I came across an article from the Nation Thailand newspaper that shed a surprising light on my experience and that of my friends. The article, titled \u201eThailand's New Digital Identity Verification Laws Raise Concerns About Online Freedoms,\u201c talks about new regulations in Thailand that could affect how social media platforms operate in the country.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"25:1-25:65\">Here is an excerpt:<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"27:1-27:558\">\u201eAccording to an article from Nation Thailand, new digital identity verification laws are being implemented in Thailand. The regulations aim to increase online security and combat cybercrime, requiring social media platforms and other online service providers to implement stricter user authentication processes. While the intent is to create a safer online environment, there are concerns among advocates of online freedoms about potential overreach and unintended consequences, including disruption of user access and privacy concerns.\u201c<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"29:1-29:390\">Could that be the reason? It seems very likely. The timing matches perfectly with our blocked accounts. It seems that Meta, in an effort to comply with these new Thai regulations, might implement more stringent, perhaps overly stringent, account verification or flagging systems. When you consider that this happened to three foreigners in Thailand on the same day, it's hard to ignore the correlation.<\/p><p data-sourcepos=\"29:1-29:390\">\u00a0<\/p><hr data-sourcepos=\"31:1-31:3\" \/><p data-sourcepos=\"33:1-33:63\">\u00a0<\/p><h3 data-sourcepos=\"33:1-33:63\"><strong>Legal Risks and Business Dependence on Social Networks<\/strong><\/h3><div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div><p data-sourcepos=\"35:1-35:235\">My experience goes beyond personal annoyance and touches on critical legal and business aspects. It shows how <strong>fragile can be our digital presence<\/strong> and how easy it is to lose access to important channels of communication and marketing.<\/p><ul data-sourcepos=\"37:1-44:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"37:1-37:451\"><strong>Regulatory Risk:<\/strong> As we have seen with the example of Thailand, governments around the world are still looking for ways to regulate the digital space. These regulations may have <strong>direct and immediate impact on users<\/strong> and companies that rely on these platforms. Unexpected changes in the rules or <strong>requiring new forms of verification<\/strong> can lead to temporary or even permanent blocking of accounts, interrupting your ability to communicate and conduct business.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"37:1-44:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"38:1-42:125\"><strong>Business Dependence and Contacts:<\/strong> For many businesses, especially smaller ones or those that operate in an online environment, social media is a pillar of their <strong>marketing, communication and community building<\/strong>. Losing access to your account may mean:<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"37:1-44:0\"><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul data-sourcepos=\"39:5-42:125\"><li data-sourcepos=\"39:5-39:136\"><strong>Loss of direct business contacts:<\/strong> Connections with clients, partners and suppliers are often maintained directly through the platforms.<\/li><li data-sourcepos=\"40:5-40:131\"><strong>Stop marketing campaigns:<\/strong> Active campaigns come to an abrupt halt, leading to financial losses and strategy disruption.<\/li><li data-sourcepos=\"41:5-41:119\"><strong>Damage to reputation and trust:<\/strong> The sudden disappearance of a company from the platform can raise questions and distrust among customers.<\/li><li data-sourcepos=\"42:5-42:125\"><strong>Inability to get feedback and reviews:<\/strong> An important channel for service improvement and reputation building is cut off<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"37:1-44:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"43:1-44:0\"><strong>Legal Defenselessness:<\/strong> In most cases they are <strong>conditions of use<\/strong> social networks set up so that the platform has extensive rights to block or terminate an account for virtually any reason and without compensation. As a user, you have a very <strong>limited possibilities for legal defence<\/strong> against the decisions of the platform. Your \u201edigital ownership\u201c on these platforms is really just a license that can be taken away at any time.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><h3 data-sourcepos=\"45:1-45:30\"><strong>What does it mean for you?<\/strong><\/h3><div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div><p data-sourcepos=\"47:1-47:132\">If you live in Thailand, or anywhere in the world as a digital nomad or entrepreneur with an online presence, this is an important <strong>Wake-up call<\/strong>:<\/p><ul data-sourcepos=\"49:1-54:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"49:1-49:194\"><strong>Prepare to have your account blocked:<\/strong> As governments around the world tackle online security and regulation, instances of unexpected account blocking or authentication requests may become increasingly common.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"49:1-54:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"50:1-50:201\"><strong>Back up your data:<\/strong> Make sure you have important contacts, photos and information backed up elsewhere, not just on social media. Your key data shouldn't be tied to just one platform.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"49:1-54:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"51:1-51:193\"><strong>Know your platform support:<\/strong> Find out how to access professional support if you're a business user. For personal users, be aware of the official account recovery channels.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"49:1-54:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"52:1-52:134\"><strong>Be informed:<\/strong> Keep up to date with local news and digital policy changes in the countries where you operate or visit.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"49:1-54:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"53:1-54:0\"><strong>Diversify your online channels:<\/strong> Don't rely on just one social network for all your business and communication needs. Have your own website, email list and other independent channels too.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><ul data-sourcepos=\"49:1-54:0\"><li data-sourcepos=\"53:1-54:0\"><b>Make sure another person manages the account<\/b> - especially the business one. Only thanks to the access of another person to our business accounts was it possible to contact the Help desk and provide adequate assistance.<\/li><\/ul><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>We have encountered a similar problem with clients in the past. In one case, for example, it was about blocking an account in Google Maps. So this phenomenon is present on several social platforms and will \u201ejump out\u201c at you at the most unexpected and inopportune moment.<\/div><p data-sourcepos=\"55:1-55:347\">While my experience was stressful, it served as a powerful reminder of the fragility of our digital presence and the increasing complexity of navigating the online space in a world with evolving regulations.
